Keep in Touch Breast and Cervical Health Education Program - Volunteers with a Vision



Black Women for Wellness is on a mission! A mission with commitment to the empowerment, improved health and well-being of Black Women.

Black Women for Wellness offers the Keep in Touch Breast and Cervical Health Education Program in South Los Angeles as a tool of community empowerment to eliminate health disparity surround breast and cervical cancers.

Keep In Touch is designed to address, discuss, and problem-solve issues of potential barriers to seeking screenings, early detection and interventions, (i.e. economic, psychosocial, socio-cultural, insurance, etc.) Our objectives include:

♥ Increase knowledge, attitudes and behavior surrounding breast & cervical health and cancer
♥ Increase risk reduction knowledge, education, information and behaviors toward being a well woman♥ Increase peer support for preventive health behaviors and early detection screenings and,
♥ Increase access to culturally appropriate education, screenings and treatment for African American & Black women.

Keep in Touch Breast & Cervical Health Education is a free program currently funded through the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (www.komen.org) – Los Angeles Affiliates. Our cadre of volunteer peer educators & advocates know as Health Motivators outreach throughout our diverse community, touching community -based organizations, churches, mosques, sororities, recovery homes, book clubs, professional/social and civic as well any gathering of Black women to speak on the importance of being a well woman.

Black Women for Wellness emphasizes the importance of health via prevention, encompassing holistic measures and incorporating early detection strategies. We seek to be well women.

Black Women for Wellness recruits, train, coordinates and supports Health Motivators as peer educators and advocates to present and table at community events as well as advocates for African American & Black women to reduce risk factors, practice and seek early detection, enter into research and impact policy pertinent to women’s health care issues. Black Women for Wellness also publishes health education materials that support the efforts of Keep in Touch Health Motivators.

Keep in Touch Breast Motivators



Speak on the role nutrition plays with risk reduction for breast cancer, how exercise improves the quality of life, assists with the healing process and improves breast health. BHMs share information on obtaining the correct bra fit, the impacts of incorrect fits on shoulders, back pain and self-esteem. Most importantly, BHMs explain and demonstrate how to complete breast self-exams, when to seek clinical exams and mammography’s, various treatment options, referrals and survivor support groups.
