There are three types of screenings for early detection of breast cancer;
- breast self exams, completed by you on a monthly bases,
- clinical exams, a hand palpitation of the breast area performed by a clinician or provider on an annual bases and mammography, and
- an X-Ray of the breast.
Black women have been known to develop cancer at much earlier ages the women of other ethnicities or cultures, therefore Black Women for Wellness recommends that women should start breast self exams and clinical exams as early as age 20, and have a baseline mammography by age 40.

Advocacy groups are the front line in keeping affordable accessible and appropriate services in the community. They track policy, funding, hospital mergers and how women as patients and clients are treated when approaching these facilities. Support Groups form loving circles around women who must walk down the path of cancer treatment, they are the women who have been there, done that and lived to tell and help others. They often will hold your hand through treatment and speak about the treatment issues and challenges medical providers forget to mention.
